THE Proposed Plan for Our New High School:
A Good 1st Step: BUT We Deserve MORE!
The new Little Village High School Plan being presented tonight is a good first step. Las Madres en Huelga, all of us who live and work in Little Village, our organizations, the architects and the Chicago Public Schools are to be congratulated. |
But We deserve more: The plan proposes to spend $50 million for our school of 1,400 students:
That's $35,700 per student!!!
But in 1998 the CPS spent $37 million on the North Side College Prep High School for 800 students:
That's $46,250 per student!!
Our children and community deserve the same amount of money to be spent on our new high school per student,
which is $65 million, not $50 million:
-
26th street makes more sales tax money for Chicago than anyplace except Michigan Ave.
-
Do we deserve less than people who live on the north side? NO!
-
Do we deserve an auditorium that seats only 500 people, when there are 1,400 students in the school and we want it to be used for our community for concerts, plays and neighborhood events: we need an auditorium that seats at least 1,000 people
-
Do we deserve a dinning room that serves 350 students, when there are 1,400 students in the school: we want it to have two Dining rooms that each serve 350 students.
-
The original high school plan called for a vocational program with a carpentry shop, auto mechanic shop and others for those students who choose that as their career. None of this vocational program are included in the proposal plan! Our Children Deserve both College Prep and Vocational programs.
-
The original plan proposed by the community called for a 3 story building with perhaps 1 story underground: this plan says the building is only 2 stories.
-
This means open space for athletic fields and a park will be taken away because it is cheaper to build a 2 story building than a 3 story building!!!
Our Children Deserve a 3 story building
We deserve an equal share of the CPS budget for our school and our children: we deserve a $65 million school, not a $50 million one.
