Angelic Organics Learning Center
Angelic Organics Learning Center
10 Years and Growing - celebrating a decade of growing food,
farmers, and friendships! Angelic Organics Learning Center
helps urban and rural people build local food systems.
The Learning Center offers opportunities to grow healthy food
and a better quality of life, connect with farmers and the land,
and learn agricultural and leadership skills. To find out more,
visit www.learngrowconnect.org.
LVEJO's Comite Primavera (Spring Committee) is growing backyard and community gardens in Chicago's Mexican-American neighborhood. Their newest site is at Amor de Dios United Methodist Church, whose twice a week food pantry serves 600 families. The on-site garden will provide fresh produce for the pantry while Comite members teach safe, effective methods of growing good food in the city.
The Learning Center is helping group members to modify their extensive agricultural skills for the city and Chicago's northern latitude. Partnership with the Learning Center offers neighborhood gardeners connection with local examples and resources, including field trips to see vermiculture at Pacific Garden Mission, Earth First Farms organic apple orchard in Michigan, and our partner Angelic Organics CSA farm.

Workshops and meetings in Spanish increase gardeners' access to new information and methods, like season extension using low and high tunnels, Biodynamic soil building, organic methods of plant care, and goats milk soap & cheese making...Read More

Work Day and Inauguration of Amor De Dios Community Garden Site

On behalf of LVEJO, we would like to extend a huge thank you to the Comite Primavera, Amor de Dios parishioners, LVEJO board members and all the volunteers who came out and helped with the site.

From the take down of the playground, dead tree, to the installation of the woodchips and soil, building of the low tunnels and coming soon the first planting.

We invite you to come by and volunteer this fall and winter and help in the maintenance of the site.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to help make this happen.

LVEJO is proud to have hosted the DePaul environmental student group Environmental Concerns Organization (ECO). These amazing students came out in the rain and cold and helped Eduardo Anaya, Urban Agriculture Organizer and Sr. Barega. volunteer turn the dirt and prep 6 gardens in and around LVEJO. We greatly appreciate there time, dedication and willingness to work in bad weather to help make our gardens beautiful for 2008.

Sunday, May 4th Urban Agriculture Fair

On Sunday, May 4th LVEJO, the Spring Garden Committee and LVEJO volunteers hosted the First Annual Urban Agriculture Fair at St. Agnes of Bohemia Church Gym. The event went from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with over 100 attendants throughout the day.  LVEJO members and local community members showed there skills and talents at the fair by demonstrating presentations in worm compost, how to maintain – raise chickens, rabbits, doves, home made bread, veggie pozole, herbalists, Zoils, plants potted in recycled planters, recycled quilt making and gardens.  LVEJO would like to thank Father Foley of St. Agnes Church for allowing us the use of the gym, the Spring Garden Committee for there work on the event, Angelic Organics for the worm compost and in helping plan the event as well as all of the presenters who took the time to come out and share there skills and talents with the community.

After the Fair the Spring Garden Committee hosted a community meeting to discuss 2008/2009 community garden projects. LVEJO and the Spring Garden Committee greatly appreciate Alderman Cardenas and his staff’s commitment to work with us on acquiring a large garden space and Angelic Organics for working with us to plan out the site.

LVEJO and the Commite Primavera (Spring Time Committee) hosted a work day at a apple farm in southwest Michigan.

Campaign participants, community members and volunteers helped pick apples, learned about tomatoes growing, and helped prep the trees for the winter.

Hay rides and a fall festival were hosted after the hard day. We thank our partners on this project for this great opportunity.

LVEJO's Urban Agriculture Program has mobilized 50 families in the last 2 years to build community and backyard vegetable gardens. 15 residents have been certified in the last 3 months under the Building Urban Gardens Training Program. We continue to work with community members, schools, churches and organizations to help create gardens throughout the area.

.....

In the Summer of 2007 parents of McCormick School and local community members applied for and received a Green Net Grant to create a small garden outside the school. With the help of over 12 volunteers the garden has expanded to include the front of the building as well.

Some Garden Journal Entries

On January 31st, 2004 The People United for Dignity, Democracy and Justice Group (LVEJO’s leadership group) began attending the Building Urban Gardens Series (B.U.G.S), hosted by Garfield Park Conservatory. This group is learning all about planning, organizing and creating community gardens.

During the month of January a group of parents at Gary school began a gardening group. This group has met several times to talk about when and where they will create their garden.

During the month of February, the Eli Whitney Beautification committee began meeting and discussing the creation of a garden in front of the school. Currently, the group is passing out a survey inside the school to vote for the colors and plants in the garden.

LVEJO wishes all these groups the best of luck in the creation of their community garden in the Spring of 2007.

• If you would like to learn more about these groups or join them, or if you would like to begin your own gardening group, please contact at LVEJO (773) 762-6991.
