Day of the Dead Altar / Display
Day of the Dead is an annual celebration to honor the spirits of the dead, observed in Mexico, Latin America and in the United Stated on November 2nd.
On the Day of the Dead many believe that the spirits of the dead return to commune with the living. Families leave offerings for these spirits, attend fiestas dressed in costumes and clean and decorate the grave of deceased family members. Most Day of the Dead activities take place at home. Many families construct offrendas (offerings), table that display gifts of food and drink for the spirits of the dead. Special loaves of bread known as hojaldra are baked for the holiday and are often included in offerings to the spirits. Other food offerings are selected with the spirit of a specific individual in mind, including dishes the deceased person enjoyed in life. The offrenda is decorated with flowers, especially an orange or yellow flower known as cempasúchil (flower of the dead) and the mano de león (lion’s paw). Also, arches of palm leaves and banners of tissue paper cut into intricate designs frequently hang above the ofrenda table.
In honor of our families and culture at LVEJO and within the Little Village community, staff and PUDDJ participants will be building a Altar in honor of the Day of the Dead. If you would like to remember those who have passed away either in your family, friends or important figures please bring: pictures, favorite food or drink, flowers, candles, and decorative items.

Altar en Honor del Dia de los Muertos
El día del Muerto es una celebración anual en honor de los espíritus de los muertos, observado en México, Latinoamérica y en los Estados Unidos el 2 de Novembre. En el Día del Muertos muchos creen que los espíritus del los muertos regresan a comunicarse con los seres vivos. Las familias crean las ofrendas para estos espíritus, Las familias limpian y decoran la tumba de los miembros de sus seres queridos. La mayoría de Las actividades en honor del Dia suceden en casa. Muchas familias construyen altares, en el cual presentan alimentos y bebida para Los espíritus del muerto. Los panes especiales conocidos como hojaldra se hornean especificamente para este dia y se presentan en ofrendas a Los espíritus. Otras ofrendas del alimento se escogen con El individuo en mente que ya fallecio, inclusive platos que la persona difunta gozó en la vida. La ofrenda se decora con flores, especialmente una naranja o flor amarilla conocidos como cempasúchil (flor del muerto) y la mano de león. También, Los arcos de hojas de palma y banderas cortadas de papel de tejido con diseños complejos cuelgan con frecuencia arriba la mesa de ofrenda.
En honor de nuestras familias y la cultura de LVEJO y dentro de la comunidad de La Villita, El personal y participantes de PUDDJ estarán construyendo un Altar en El honor del Día del Muerto. Si usted quere homenajiar Los que se han muerto en su familia, amigos o figueras importante por favor traigan: Los retratos, alimentos o bebida favoritos, flores, velas, y artículos decorativos.
