myspace
By: Rafael Hurtado, Curie Metro High/ LVEJO Intern

Myspace.com is one of the most visited websites in the country. Some people say it is good, some people say it is bad. But you have to remember for every good thing there is a bad thing. Myspace.com is a web site for people from all over the country make there own website in a way. It is called a “Profile”. On your page you can write information about yourself called “blogs”. Myspace users also have a “Profile Song” were you can choose what song to put on you page. All this is done to give your space, MYSPACE a type of feel as to who you are and what your about. So be careful to represent yourself!

There are some bad things to myspace. The most dangerous thing on myspace are your “Friends”. There are some people that add other myspace users to their friends list just so they can seem like they have a lot of friends and there have been some problems in the past because of it. For example, somebody was raped, right here in Chicago! These people met online and then decided to meet in person. One just has to be careful with who you add and you think you know.

However, there are benefits to myspace. You can check out movie trailers, and if you are a big music lover you can add

4,484,204 different kind of music artist for every kind of music. If you add you favorite artist to your page they will send you messages about when they are going to release their new albums or when they are coming to town. It is a big form of advertisement, but also a cultural movement.

If myspace can get someone to start listening to Emo then maybe myspace can get people to start caring! MySpace might have the potential to create change and organize ourselves to do it! Many organizations, like LVEJO, they have a myspace profile. You can add us to your friends list for information about Little Village Community or anything concerning it. You can also get your service learning hours at LVEJO by writing articles in any up coming editions of “El Cilantro” or you can also volunteer by helping us out in the office. To add us go to www.myspace.com/el_cilantro_youth.

You can meet to all our staff online and see what up coming events LVEJO will have to help the community.

It is a good website. It is a great place to meet friends and to talk to people. Learn more about your favorite artists and movies. Stay in touch with family members from all over the country. Just be careful who you talk to.

Urban Gardens Around Little Village

LVEJO is proud to say that we have created four beautiful gardens in the Little Village community. We are proud to say that we are under way of creating another garden. Our fifth garden is going to be the biggest of them all. LVEJO’s fifth garden is going to be on the MAS (multicultural arts school) campus at Little Village High School. We need volunteers from the community to help take care of the gardens. If you can not find the time to help us personally we will be thankful for any tools we can barrow. Wheel barrows are on the top of our supply list. If you or any body you know need service hours for school or for what ever reason. Or you want to start your own Garden at your school please feel free to contact;

Scientology: New Age Religion or Idiotic Cult?

BY: Goggles aka Eddie da MAn

According to scientology.org, the word Scientology means "the study of truth."

“Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:

Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability. In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results. Through Scientology, people all over the world are achieving the long-sought goal of true spiritual release and freedom.”

Sounds somewhat interesting right? Well, here’s where it gets “weird,” and believe me, weird is an understatement.

The founder of the religion of scientology is a man known as L. Ron Hubbard. In his time back in the 1950’s, he was an acclaimed scientist according to scientology.org, but most people know him as a science fiction writer, known for writing stories that were very “out there.”

His idea for the creation of life is very outrageous, if you ask me. According to scientologists, the creation of life is exactly what some people have seen on the hit Comedy Central show, South Park. They believe that our minds and souls came from alien spirits.

So…. now it’s up to you to decide what to believe. For more information you can visit www.whatisscientology.org.

Survey: Pink Line Slows Down ½ of CTA Riders

By: Michael Patula. Better Transit Organizer

Little Village group’s survey shows Pink Line delays, Loop congestion, more Blue Line trains needed for 54/Cermak

– Some may find the Pink Line to be pretty, but for almost 1/2 of CTA train riders it has slowed down their “journey” to and from the Loop. A recent survey of over 400 CTA train passengers shows that more riders have slower trips than have faster trips since the June 25, 2006 start of the Pink Line. The survey done by the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) reports results from over 3,000 trips representing riders on all the CTA’s rail lines.

Since the Pink Line began, 46% of trips were reported to be longer, 13% of riders reported their trips take the same amount of time. 33% reported a shorter trip. 8% of the trips were made by undecided riders.

Over 70% of respondents voted that there should be more 54/Cermak Blue Line trains: at least as many as there were before the Pink Line began: 4-6 per hour during all hours instead of the present 17 per weekday.

Earlier this summer, CTA President Frank Kruesi justified the $38 million of taxpayer money spent so far on the Pink Line by claiming it would save riders 5, 10, or even 15 minutes. According to the new survey, the average CTA trip is about four and a half minutes longer since the Pink Line began, but those with longer rides have felt the change much more sharply. While most riders appreciate the overall frequency of the trains since the Pink Line began, they also express frustration about frequent delays, congestion on the Loop slowing down the Green, Orange, Purple, and Brown Lines, and the lack of communication from the CTA when problems and changes occur. Riders who depend on the 54/Cermak Blue Line to

travel to and from the Medical Center at Polk Street, UIC, Whitney Young Magnet High School, the main Post Office, Union Station, Rosemont Convention Center, and O’Hare airport are most affected, having to wait longer since 54/Cermak Blue Line trains only come every 30 minutes of the rush hour. Their traveling schedules are limited by the fact that Blue Line trains only operate about 7 hours a day, weekdays only. The Pink Line does not serve these destinations, so riders have been forced to pay more transfers, or to wait on buses, which are usually much slower than the train because they have to compete with auto traffic. Some riders have said that they would drive or bike from now on instead.

CTA train operators said before the Pink Line began that it would create potentiallydangerous congestion on the elevated Loop. Now they and many passengers are sayingthecongestion is worse than they thought, creating slow-downs. CTA statistics confirm rider opinion that Loop trains have been slowed down by the extra Pink Line trains on the elevated Loop. With winter rain, snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures on the way, a cutback of Pink Line traffic and a return to 54/Cermak Blue Line trains may be unavoidable for safety and speed reasons.

The comments from riders who enjoy and benefit from the Pink Line show that they recognize the need for more frequent Blue Line trains.

Survey respondents were asked to rank in order of preference what kind of 54/Cermak Blue or Pink service they would like to see after December 24th, 2006 when the 180-day Pink Line experiment ends.

LVEJO invites people from all over the city to join the new Transit Justice Coalition to cut back the Pink Line, and restore more 54/Cermak Blue Line trains, resulting in better, faster rides on the Brown, Green, Orange and Purple Lines in the Loop. Riders can contact LVEJO at 773-762-6991 or at publictransit@lvejo.org and read other rider’s comments at LVEJO’s website lvejo.org. website http://lvejo.org.

Back To School Survival Guide (Well Sort Of)

Check this out guys! I got this e-mail from my co-worker and it had some pretty good information on Cps Policies. It was easy to relate to because I just graduated elementary school and while in elementary school I saw a lot of things that weren’t right. I knew things weren’t right but I never realized they were doing things that were against CPS policies. So now I know what to do if I’m ever in that situation. I think no person should have to go through those things without it being their fault. Take five minutes to read this article and learn your rights! Go back to school and be prepared for a change.

Basic Right

Every enrolled high school aged student is entitled to a free public education until the end of their 21st year or until they graduate, whichever comes first.

Basic Responsibility Students must attend school regularly until they are 17 years old.

In February 2004, CPS amended its policy on truancy and absenteeism with the goal of reducing the number of students dropping out.

* The school cannot drop a student due to attendance problems and excessive absences.

* Students are not to be sent home, refused admission to school, or given out-of-school suspension due to tardiness. School administrators must document all voluntary withdraws of H.S students over 17yrs old with a written Consent to Withdraw form. The parent must sign if the student is under 18yrs old.

* The Consent to Withdraw form must remind students that they have the right to re-enroll and finish their high school education.

No School or District can exclude your child/student, permanently, except in the following circumstances: (You may or may not be able to get back in if…) You are expelled for serious violations of the discipline code, and only after a full hearing on your case.

OR

If the school can prove that the student that has dropped out, is 19yrs or over and does not have the credits to graduate by his/her 21st birthday. (That you can’t possibly graduate on time.)

OR

If the student is 17yrs old or over and failing or not attending for two semesters in a row they can be excluded for one semester only, and only after they have received a written warning, a support plan and an option to receive a hearing for their case. (If you are failing and not attending for two semesters they can exclude you for one semester only.)

Environmetal Racism Strikes... Yet Again
BY: Jose Monarrez, Curie Metro High

Chicago has gone from a metropolitan wasteland to a beautiful city over the past decades this, of course being a good thing. However, it seems that people in power like Mayor Daley consider the downtown area to be Chicago only. Downtown is great, no question -BUT, with multimillion dollar projects like Millennium Park being done downtown, and nothing being done in other areas, such as the southwest Chicago community known as Little Village, leaves room for skepticism as to the fairness and priorities of city officials.

Little Village has only ONE major park in a community that has approximately 91,000 residents. Piotrowski Park is only accessible by about ¼ of the community. This leaves many people to question when we will get another park.

The Little Village community has been fighting for a park for over 2 years. We are the #1 community in the city that lacks green space according to The City green Space Program , but so far is seems as though people like Mayor Daley and our alderman, Ricardo Muñoz, don’t care enough about our community to give us a park.

We have two proposed sites to get green space. The first is the former Washburne Trade school site on 31 st and Kedzie. We have proposed that we have a sport’s facility built there. Since the building is still owned by The Chicago Public Schools (CPS), we cannot even begin to get work done on a park until they tear down the building. We have pleaded with them for many months until community residents became tired of it. On August 23, 2006, representatives from LVEJO, Saint Agnes of Bohemia and others went to the CPS board meeting, no longer pleading, but DEMANDING that they tear down the building and build us a sport’s facility. People such as Father Foley of Saint Agnes feel that they didn’t give us enough attention. So in what ways can we get CPS’s attention? In what ways can we let them know that we mean business and shouldn’t get messed around with? How about this:

  • Call and Call and Call again ChicagoPublicSchools , DEMANDING, not requesting, but DEMANDING that they tear down Washburne. Call Arnie Duncan 773.553.1500
  • Call Chicago Park District constantly DEMANDING that they build us a sport’s facility and a clean park on Celotex Site. Call Tim Mitchell 312-742-7529
  • Call and write letters to Mayor Daley and Alderman Muñoz, telling them exactly what you want. (312) 744-4000 (Daley) - (773) 762-1771 (Munoz)
  • Work with LVEJO as a volunteer to get the community moving.

The second site we have proposed is the former site of the Celotex Company, which produced asphalt materials. Now owned by Honeywell, the site is known to be very polluted, especially with chemicals known as PAH’s. PAH’s are Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons, which are known to cause cancer. Our proposal isn’t a difficult concept: we want the site to be cleaned up as option #4 on the U.S. EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) guidelines, which is completely. We need an installation of a three foot clay cover along with hot-spot excavation of impacted soil. The estimated cost of it is $48.6 million. This money should be given by Honeywell and it would only cost them 17 hours of work! They don’t feel like doing this though. So, we need to do a bit of convincing. You can do this by writing letters and emails as well as calling Honeywell at (973) 455-5281.

The DarkCoffee

by: mini-sol

It’s a typical morning heading to Downtown Chicago, you see the numerous amount of people getting off the trains walking at a fast pace to get to school or work on time, chit-chatting in the streets, and the lovely smell of brewed coffee at the corner Starbucks. WAIT! Did I just mention coffee?

The Starbucks empire has grown at a very fast rate with an ultimate goal: To become the "premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world" while maintaining their "uncompromising principles" as they grow.

Currently, Starbucks has 5,939 company-operated coffeehouses and 2, 952 licensed locations in the U.S. They also have 1, 357 company-operated coffeehouses and 2,082 joint venture and licensed locations internationally.

Q. What does this mean?

A. STARBUCKS IS MIGHTY RICH!

Let's do a little game of True or False (answers at end of page):

1. Jim Donald, CEO of Starbucks makes approximately $2,145,000 salary.

2. The Average Latin American coffee farmer makes $300 salary.

3. Starbucks is screwing over coffee farmers.

Q. If Starbucks is MIGHTY RICH, then why aren’t the coffee farmers as rich?

A. The price for coffee per pound is between $0.60-$0.85, not a decent price to sustain a family.

Don’t you ever wonder why coffee prices are so high? Companies like Starbucks enjoy making profit, if world coffee is cheap, the better for them. A Grande Vanilla Latte costs $3.50, and world coffee costs $0.60. You are paying Starbucks 5 times more than what Starbucks paid their coffee farmers. Unfair, huh?

Next time you go to Starbucks think about your choices wisely. Ask them for brewed, *fair trade coffee.

* Trade carried on under a fair-trade agreement. To become Fair Trade certified, an importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price per pound of $1.26, providing much needed credit to farmers, and providing technical assistance such as help transitioning to organic farming.

** answers to 1. TRUE 2.TRUE 3.TRUE

CLEAN OUR AIR - STOP KILLING US

September 11th 2001 Facts

BY: “RAFAS”, Curie H.S.

Number “11”

The date of the attack:   9/11 -  9 + 1 + 1 = 11. September 11 has 9 letters and 2 numbers: 9+2=11. The number 911 is the telephone number for emergencies in North America. September 11th is the 254th day of the year:   2 + 5 + 4 = 11. After September 11th there are 111 days left to the end of the year. March 11, 2002, marked 6 months since the attack, and fell in the 11th week of 2002.

On March 11, 2002, New York City lit the sky with 88 (8 x 11 = 88) powerful GE bulbs that sent light beams
into the sky from the World Trade Center site. The next morning, on March 12, 2002, 11 FDNY firemen
were recovered from Ground Zero.

Plane Facts

The first plane to hit the towers was American Airlines Flight 11. The Flight 11 call letters were AA11: A=1, A=1, AA=11. Four of the hijackers on flight AA11 have the initials A. A. for their names: AA=11. The fifth AA11 hijacker was the pilot, Mohamed Atta, 11 letters, and AA in last name. Flight AA11 had 92 people on board - 9 + 2 = 11. Flight AA11 had 11 crew members - 2 pilots and 9 flight attendants. The target of Flight AA11 was in New York City -11 letters. The State of  New York was the 11th State added to the Union. Manhattan Island was discovered on Sept. 11, 1609 by Henry Hudson -11 letters. Trade Center is 11 letters, and Skyscrapers is 11 letters. World Trade Center Towers is 22 letters - 2 x 11 =22. The WTC Twin Towers - standing side by side, look like the number 11. The WTC Towers are each 110-storeys high. The first WTC tower hit ( North Tower) collapses at 10:28 A.M. -1+2+8=11. The 1st Fire Unit to arrive to the WTC towers was FDNY Unit 1. Unit 1 lost 11 firemen. The WTC towers collapsed to a height of 11 stories. After 99 days of burning, NYC declares the WTC fires are extinguished - 9 x 11 = 99.

The World Trade Center fires burn continuously for 99 days, between September 11, 2001 and
December 19, 2001. The World Trade Center fire is the longest burning commercial fire in U.S. history. On September 7, 2002, NYC Medical Examiners announced the revised official
death toll from the World Trade Center attacks was 2,801 - (2+8+0+1 = 11).
On the morning of September 11, 2002 the names of 2,801 victims were read at a Ground Zero
Ceremony. It took 2 ½ hours to read all the names.

Friendly Request to the CTA

Dear CTA Board:

The changes you have made on the 54/Cermak Line (from blue to pink) have inconvenienced many of us. It has affected students who go to schools like Whitney Young High School, UIC, and several other schools along the old 54/ Cermak route. It has affected daily commuters and travelers who want to go to O’Hare from 54/Cermak and overall has caused congestion on the elevated platform in the Loop. It has also affected riders going to the stops in the Dearborn Tunnel, which are key stops to people’s jobs. The new bus routes have caused confusion to daily riders all over the city. People’s travel times have increased more than they have decreased, when the CTA had said the opposite would happen. So why should Chicago riders have to inconvenience themselves for the few that benefit?

We are your clients! We pay the ELEVATED fares that the CTA has so KINDLY implemented. A person would think that with higher prices there would be better service! The Pink Line costs 5 million dollars to operate and the only thing it’s doing is slowing trains down in the loop. So why should CTA customers and Chicago taxpayers pay so much for lousy service? As customers we DEMAND better service! It is the CTA’s duty to provide quality and affordable service to the City of Chicago even if it means that the Pink Line project has to come to an end.

Now is the time for the CTA to ACT! It would be appreciated throughout the whole city, especially now that students are going back to school now more than ever the city of Chicago is in need of quality and affordable service. Listen to your customers! They know what they need because they ride the train every day!

There have been many ideas on how to have the service improved! People want more Blue Line and less Pink line, for sure. The CTA should keep the current frequency of trains on the 54/Cermak but at least half of those trains NEED to be Blue Line trains to and from O’Hare, during all hours including non-peak, nights, and weekends. Restoring the Blue Line with the same frequency would the most equitable and efficient solution for transportation in the City of Chicago. Thank you for your time and we know that our opinion will make the difference and that we will have what we want!

Sincerely,

The City Of Chicago Riders

Endangered Species

By La Femme Mysterieuse

I'm a prisoner of my home
A home that isn't my habitat
A habitat where I feel alone

 There is no prey
There is no water
Only predators staring my way

 The despised one!
I can hear VENOM
Hissing its way upon me

 Their Envy
Makes my heart bleed...
Makes me weak

 My Gracefulness
kills them
slowly...

The winds
embrace me
elevate me

They deliver me
to freedom
to paradise.

“Cycle of Pain”

By: Ricardo Hernandez, LVCDC/CEASEFIRE

Conception is a time of miracles. This is a time when men and women from different backgrounds are joined together, in the miraculous act of reproducing another human being.

The child is visited, instantly bringing light into the home of a family, dealing with the darkness of the world. The baby is cuddled, hugged, rocked, and kissed with the greatest of intentions on our mind. The mere thought of disaster befailling this child is driven far into our sub-conscience.

The child then grows, year by year, cherished and loved by many. Next, bonds are created with siblings and neighborhood children alike. Memories of birthday cakes, clowns, piñatas, Christmas, girlfriends, first car, all creating a value system for life. It is a summer night and there is a shooting in the hood! Your boy just got shot. The police have few answers in regards to culprit, with this shit happening all the time, and no apparent motive. Mom comes down and screams with most unbearable screech of agony. Mijo, porque mijo! This a time of utter disbelief for a family, with all plans altered, victim’s loved ones are in un-breathable disbelief.

Suddenly, the family and friends of the victim, in all their love, plan for revenge. Anger fills the hearts of the household from brothers to sisters, from fathers to uncles, to homies and cousins. “We will hold someone responsible, and f--- their whole world up real bad”!

Next, some innocent child is out walking from point “a” to point “b”. “A” to “B”, being the distance anywhere between basketball, to playing X-box at a friend’s house. Maybe the child is just getting some exposure on his front porch. Then suddenly the worst scenario occurs, at least from a parent’s perspective. The child is shot to death, like a wild animal in cold blood. Conclusion: This Is not honorable behavior; it is probably the worst form of sin capable of being committed. The murderer robs, beyond his own conception. Another family crushed, by somebody else’s nonsense. The evil cycle continues. A young innocent child loses his life once more. Those horrible events dramatically crush the hope of a family. Happy days are no longer sunny at the mention of the deceased. Before thinking one of your family members to receive misdirected vengeance for someone else’s issue.

Let us stop this bullshit now.

We ask for you the young future leaders of our communities, to show real leadership, A good leader leads people towards the pursuit of happiness and peace. A negative leader cares nothing about you and leads people towards a life of prison, death, unemployment, injury, and spiritual depletion.

We pray for the eradication of hateful ideologies and that our children embrace our similarities, not the illusionary differences created by hateful individuals.

Mouse Story ...

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

"What food might this contain?" The mouse wondered.

He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning:

"There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized, but said,

"I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray.

Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said, “There is a mousetrap in the house!

There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse.

I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap-- alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.

In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.

To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.

So many people came for her funeral; the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life.

We must keep an eye out

For one another and make an extra effort to

Encourage one another.
